Art lovers will have plenty of ways to beat the heat this summer, with a plethora unusual number of contemporary art and folk art exhibits opening just in time to lure visitors into a cool respite.
Here are some thumbnail previews of the upcoming shows:
“Howardena Pindell: What Remains To Be Seen,” Aug. 25-Nov. 25, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. Early and recent paintings, video art and works on paper trace the multidisciplinary career of this influential New York artist, whose pioneering activism melded with the later challenge of short-term amnesia to produce rich, often unconventional artistic statements on sexism, racism and personal identity.
