For the past few years Shandaken Projects has hosted a residency program at the Storm King Art Center in upstate New York, where as many as 20 artists spend their summer outside the city and living on the 500-acre grounds.

Now Shandaken is launching another initiative, this one based in New York City, where Shandaken has its offices. Paint School will be a fellowship program for contemporary painters, 12 of whom will have the privilege of attending master classes with key figures, beginning this week and ending in May 2018. Following the end of the term, each artist will have an exhibition of his or her work.

The artists who will teach the masters classes include Faith Ringgold, Howardena Pindell, Byron Kim, Josephine Halvorson, and Ulrike Müller.

“We heard a strong desire from artists for opportunities for self-cultivation and community building,” Shandaken Projects director Nicholas Weist said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to expand our offerings at a time when free services for artists are sorely needed in New York City, and to contribute to the rich discourse surrounding contemporary painting in partnership with the extraordinary artists participating in the program.”

While only the participants will be able to attend the master classes, transcripts will be available to the public after the fact. The full list of chosen artists is below, and applications for next year’s Paint School will open in September 2018.
