Garth Greenan Gallery is pleased to announce Patrick Strzelec, an exhibition of sculptures at 529 West 20th Street. Opening on Thursday September 10, 2015, the exhibition is the artist's first with Garth Greenan Gallery. Eight of the artist's meticulously crafted mixed-media sculptures will be on view, as well as a selection of preparatory drawings. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition, with an essay by Jen Mergel.
The exhibition and its accompanying publication offer a detailed view of the artist's work since 2011, a period of intense formal and technical innovation for the artist. Over the past five years, Strzelec has created a remarkable body of abstract sculpture in an incredibly diverse range of materials—aluminum, ceramic, epoxy, steel, and wood, to name a few. Works in the exhibition such as A Version of OFF (2011), Feeder (2015), and Bird (2015), demonstrate Strzelec's mastery of these materials, as well as his unique ability to transform them into highly charismatic--albeit somewhat inscrutable—objects and forms. Wry humor and, above all, personality are pervasive qualities of the artist's work. They link him to a tradition of painting and sculpture that includes artists as diverse as the Chicago Imagists, Bill Bollinger, Eva Hesse, Ralph Humphrey, Richard Serra, and Franz West.
Born in Chicago in 1956, Patrick Strzelec received his BFA from Southern Illinois University and his MFA from Rutgers, State University of New Jersey. Since 1990, he has exhibited his work internation¬ally—first with Barbara Toll Fine Arts (1990, 1991, 1992, New York) and later with Jay Grimm Gallery (2000, 2002, New York), OH + T Gallery (2002, 2004, 2006, Boston), Michael Schultz (2006, Berlin), Galerie Rackey, (2007, Bad Honnef, Germany), and Gary Snyder Gallery (2013, New York).
Garth Greenan Gallery is pleased to represent Patrick Strzelec.
